Language Requirements in the Finnish Workplace? with Robert Brooks

  • Bloom ry Kehräsaari Tampere, , 33200 Finland (map)

Topic: Recruitment adverts at Finnish companies often have a Finnish language requirement. It is common (and frustrating) for job adverts at Finnish companies to be written and marketed in English with the Finnish language requirement only mentioned at the end; just enough time for the international applicant to get their hopes up.

But how important is the Finnish language requirement in Finnish companies in practice?

"The Finnish language requirement has been a hot topic in recruitment in Finnish companies for a long time. As someone who has learned Finnish in Finland as a foreigner and seen Finland move from a very homogeneous culture of the 90s to the current much more cosmopolitan state, I know how difficult it can be to get a job as an international person in Finland, and also just how unnecessary the Finnish language requirement often is."

Speaker: Robert Brooks is a native of the UK who has lived in Finland for over 23 years. He is a fluent Finnish speaker, co-editor of the first Finnish-English Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs (Gummerus 2007), a language specialist and teacher, as well as a freelance digital communications consultant.
